Anker PowerPort 2 Review | 30W USB-C Power Delivery Wall Charger

Anker is a renowned accessory brand that provides quality products such as power banks, portable speakers, chargers, cables and more. From their diverse lineup, we will be taking an in-depth look at the Anker PowerPort 2 Power Delivery wall-charger in this article. One of the goals with USB Type-C was to simplify cables as well as chargers for consumers. While we are still far away from having USB type-C on every electronic, Anker’s PowerPort 2 tries to offer a complete, cohesive solution for all your charging needs.

What makes Anker accessories stand out is their attention to detail and focus on quality. Previously, before Anker, there were countless different chinese accessories available on the market. However, they all had issues either in build, quality or even functionality. To address this gap, Anker jumped in and sought out to provide quality accessories without being exceedingly expensive. In this review, we will discuss about the new PowerPort 2 USB Type-C PD charger and how well it functions.

What’s in the Box?

Starting from the unboxing, PowerPort II comes packaged quite nicely. What you get within is the charger itself, a handy USB type-C to USB type-A dongle and usual paperwork. As the PowerPort has a single USB A port and secondary type-C port, the dongle is really handy if you have more than one device to charge.

Design

Following the signature white color scheme, Anker PowerPort II comes wrapped in glossy white plastic and it has an overall shape of a large power adapter. The prongs easily fold within the charger itself hence making it easy to carry in a bag without the fear of prongs being damaged or causing scratches on other devices.

Further, there is this unique aspect to the design, the front is rubberized. What this does is, it makes the front wear less quickly than regular glossy plastic. Also, found on the front, is a subtle blue ring light that lights up to indicate there is power to the device.

Power Output

Apart from build and design, power output and compatibility with devices are two key aspects for any charger. Fortunately, Anker PowerPort 2 covers a whole host of output modes and comes with PD (What is USB Power Delivery?) which provides blazing fast speeds for phone charging and can even work with ultrabooks and laptops.

For the main USB-C output, it delivers the highest wattage that is available: 30W. This is over Power Delivery standard 2.0 so you would be required to put in a PD supported device to avail the full capacity. As for USB Type-A, it can go up to 12W which is quite respectable. But that’s not it, the Type-A port has Anker’s proprietary PowerIQ 2.0 technology that automatically detects what device is connected and then produces the maximum power output for that specific device. There is also Samsung’s Adaptive Fast Charging that works with all modern Samsung phones.

Here are the technical power output figures for Anker PowerPort 2:

  • USB-C Output:
    • 30W USB-C Power Delivery 2.0 (5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/2.5A, 15V/2A, 20V/1.5A)
    • Apple 2.4A
  • USB-A Output:
    • 12W USB (5V/2.4A)
    • PowerIQ 2.0 (Quick Charge 3.0, Samsung AFC compatible)
    • Huawei FCP
    • Apple 2.4A
  • Input: 100V–240V, 1.6A, 50/60Hz

Build & Overall Reliability

Anker started off with one motto, that was to provide quality accessories but at a great value. Sticking true to that, the PowerPort II is a great reflection of this philosophy. In our use, we found the PowerPort to be quite a solid accessory, the plastic housing is dense and the prongs are solid. Plugging into different sockets, the prongs always fitted quite snug and there was no fluctuation in electricity.

Seeing how Anker markets the PowerPort II to charge two devices simultaneously, we connected a PD device to the charger and a traditional USB type-A charging phone at the same time. Not only did we see maximum power output on both but that too across the whole period when both devices were charging. Lastly, the charger slightly heats up under sustained load but that is expected with a fast charger in this small size — nothing to worry about!

Conclusion

All things considered, Anker PowerPort 2 is a great handy charger. There is an added benefit of multi-device charging without compromising much on maximum charging capacity. Its fold-able prongs, traditional gloss white finish and an included USB type-C to USB type-A dongle make it quite worth it. If we could wish for anything, it would be a smaller footprint of the device!
