Tutorial: How to Install Android 8.0 Oreo

We have put together a detailed step-by-step instructions guide on how to install Android 8.0 Oreo official firmware on Moto Z Play. If you are used to installing official updates on your phone, then this should not be any different for you.

For this procedure to work, you don’t need any custom utility, just make sure your phone is not modified and is also running latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat build or last Android 8.0 Oreo beta / soak test build. Please do that first and then get back to this tutorial. And before you proceed below, make sure you read the tutorial once before actually performing it on your Android device.

To Remember:

  • This tutorial is only for installing Android 8.0 Oreo on Moto Z Play.
  • Your phone should be running previous latest Android 7.1.1 Nougat build with Feb 2018 security patch or last Android 8.0 Oreo beta build.
  • This tutorial will wipe out all your data. Make sure you backup all your data in your phone before proceeding.
  • Good luck!

NOTE: Installing Android 8.0 Oreo OTA will WIPE / DELETE / ERASE everything from your phone even if your bootloader is still locked or already unlocked. Please make sure you have a backup of all the data. Read: How to Backup Android Apps and Other Data.

Complete Step-By-Step Instructions:

Step 1 – Download Moto Z Play from the following links for your model. You can check your Model Number by going to Settings > About Phone.

Step 2 – Please make sure Fastboot is configured and properly installed on your computer. How? See here: How to Set Up ADB and Fastboot with Android SDK.

Step 3 – Turn OFF your phone.

Step 4 – Get into the Recovery Mode on your phone. Turn ON the phone while pressing and holding the Volume Down + Power buttons till you see the Recovery mode menu. Connect your phone to your PC now.

Step 5 – Now extract the downloaded file anywhere in your computer. Go to the folder you extracted and then copy/paste all the files to your ADB directory. While the folder with the Blur_Version.27.1.28.addison.retail.en.US.zip file is open, hold the shift key on the keyboard and right-click on an empty space and select “Open command window here” option to launch a cmd window.

Note: If you followed our tutorial on setting up ADB on your computer, there is a 99% chance your ADB directory will be the platform-tools folder in your Android SDK directory.

Step 6 – Open a command window in the same ADB folder. Do so by holding SHIFT button on your computer and right-clicking on your mouse. Select “Open Command Window Here…” from the following menu.

Step 7 – To make your phone ready to receive the update package from your computer, select “Apply Update from ADB“.

Step 8 – Execute the following command on your ADB command window.

adb sideload Blur_Version.27.1.28.addison.retail.en.US.zip

Step 9 – Once it finishes, select reboot system now from the recovery mode menu.

That’s it! Your Moto Z Play should now have the official Android 8.0 Oreo firmware update installed on your phone using! Go to Settings >About phone to verify.
