HOW TO: Set Up and Install Android 7.0 Nougat Emulator on Android Studio 2.1


You can try out the latest Android 7.0 Nougat straight on your PC thanks to the Android Studio Emulator. We have had the emulator since the very beginning but recently, Google gave its Integrated Development Environment (IDE) a huge revamp and along with that, it also improved upon the emulator. The new emulator is now faster, quick and better. The latest stable version of Android Studio is 2.1 but this guide can work with any variant even the Beta ones. The target of this article is to show you how to setup Android 7.0 Nougat on your PC so you can use it straight there and then. Advantages of doing this include the fact that you wont no longer need a compatible Nexus device to test your development and also, non-developers can use this guide to get a feel for the new Android 7.0 Nougat straight on their PC. Once installed, you will be able to try out Android 7.0 Nougat straight through your PC and test apps on it. It won’t be as feature packed as a Nexus device running Android 7.0 Nougat but it will get the job done. This guide will apply to the stable version of Android Studio — which is Android Studio 2.1 at the time of writing as well as all Beta releases. Google has made quite a lot of improvements to its computer emulator. It now boasts amazing boot time speeds as well as an intuitive design compared with the old-school emulator Google ran for the past years.

How to Set Up and Install Android 7.0 Nougat Developer Preview Emulator

As mentioned earlier, this post implies that you have already installed and set up Android Studio on your computer. If you haven’t please read the following guide:

Step 1 – Open your Android Studio installation. You can execute the emulator by creating a new Android Development project and entering the Development Environment itself. Otherwise, open any project you are currently working on. From the main view go to Tools>Android>AVD Manager.

Step 2 – The next step is creating a new Virtual Device for Android 7.0 Nougat specifically. In AVD manager, you will be able to see all your Virtual installations. Just click the “Create Virtual Device” button below.

Step 3 – Next, you will need to decide what device you want to emulate. As we want the latest Android 7.0 Nougat Developer Preview running on our PC, we will choose Nexus 6P. You can also choose Nexus 5X, Nexus 6 or Nexus 9. Once selected, click Next.

Step 4 – The following screen will be showed once you click next from above step. This is where you decide what version of Android you want to run on your selected device. Choose “N” and make sure the API Level is 24 then click finish.

NOTE: Two images are available, one supports 32-bit – x86 – the other supports 64-bit – x86_64. Choose the one you want to run.

Step 5 – Now your Android Studio will ask you to agree to its license policy and then begin downloading as well as extracting the selected image. Select “Accept” and then click “Next“. Wait till the download and extraction process finishes before proceeding to the next step.

Step 6 – Once the extraction and download process finishes, click on “Finish“.
